CloudV VDI Computing

What is CloudV VDI Computing?

Yulong’s CloudD VDI computing solution allows users to access independent virtual desktops hosted in virtual machines (VMs) in the server.

With CloudV running on the Windows virtual server, each zero client users connect to an independent virtual machine with dedicated resources based on their needs. Since the virtual machines are isolated from each other, users will have the same experience as they are running on a desktop computer.

Yulong’s VDI Computing solution is a flexible and highly manageable computing solution and works best for complex deployments with diverse users and needs.

CloudV is a desktop virtualization software based on VDI architecture independently developed by Yulong, using the underlying virtualization technology based on KVM.

Using the dynamic DDP transmission protocol developed by Yulongyun, the graphics algorithm has been greatly optimized
CloudV is a cloud desktop based on the underlying LINUX system independently developed by Yulong.

VDI Features

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Benefits

Dedicated Resources

VDI allows IT admin to tailor resource availability to different users based on their needs. Users that work with graphics editing software require more resources for their desktops compared to users who only run basic word processing and web browsing applications. VDI allows IT to allocate the resources to prioritize the performance of power users or executives’ desktop. In a VDI deployment, each VM runs a single OS and only supports a single user connection at a time. All VM resources are dedicated to a single desktop, eliminating the resource contention that can occur with RDS desktops.

Personalization & Customization

VDI allows end-users to have the actual end-user experience as they are running on PCs. Within a Yulong’s VDI deployment, virtual desktop can spin up from a single, golden image or a dedicated image and be configured as persistent or non-persistent. Users with either virtual desktop have the freedom to install their own applications and have personal settings, while customization changes to non-persistent virtual desktops- including Windows settings, user-installed applications and other personal data, are preserved after the user logs out and back in again.

Highly Flexible& Manageable

With all server-side infrastructure including compute, storage and network resources virtualized, VDI makes computing of organizations highly flexible and manageable. You can easily scale up with load balancing, reconfigure resources to meet growing needs, prevent single points of failure with fail-over setup, quickly migrate running VMs from one server to another, effectively back up critical data with and restore the entire VM in an event of a failure with snapshots, and manage more other management tools and technologies to ease your IT administration.

Low Cost & All Hypervisor Compatible

Yulong provides a complete end-to-end VDI solution including the JoinVDI Virtualization Manager, Virspire Desktop Agent, and zero clients at the lowest price point. But if you get used to VMware or Citrix offerings or are having some other KVM based virtual servers in use, Yulong Virsire Desktop Agent and zero clients work in harmony with any hypervisor to provide an optimized user experience with vCloudPoint’s superior DDP protocol. The Virspire Desktop Agent is offered free in charge and the zero clients are at a fraction of the others, helping you achieve desktop virtualization within a PC budget.

What’s more?

  • More efficient resource utilization

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is directly deployed at the bottom of the bare metal architecture server and directly creates virtual machines. Compared with other vendors (such as VBOX, etc., you need to use the Windows middle layer to build virtual machines on Windows or other operating systems) The server resources consumed are much smaller. An 8-core dual-socket server can create and connect up to 50 Yulong YL-X100 cloud terminals for common use.

  • Broad client compatibility

CloudV desktop virtualization has developed two different login modes: WEB and client.
The WEB login mode is compatible with almost all clients, including but not limited to PCs, tablets, thin clients, mobile phones, industrial computers, and other devices that can support WEB pages. The client login mode can provide a very friendly login experience, and not only supports YL-A100 Linux client, but also supports all Windows clients represented by YL-X100.

  • Higher management efficiency

CloudV desktop virtualization adopts the second-generation desktop virtualization technology to further split the operating environment and installation environment of the desktop system, split applications, and desktops, and split configuration files, thereby greatly reducing management complexity and cost, and improving Improve management efficiency.
Example: An enterprise has 300 users and 20 applications. If it is not split, the IT administrator needs to manage 300 images (including the installed applications and configuration files). Using CloudV desktop virtualization second-generation technology, IT administrators only need to manage 20 dynamic applications, 1 file server, and 1 image. The management complexity is greatly reduced.
The second generation of CloudV desktop virtualization technology has also greatly reduced the demand for storage (with 199 xp less storage), and reduced procurement and maintenance costs. More importantly, in terms of management efficiency, administrators only need to patch or upgrade one image or one application, and all users will get the latest updated results, thereby improving the security and stability of the system and the workload. Also dropped drastically.

(You can use pre-install VM template or run commands for centralized installation)

3. Connect the zero clients and enjoy

(The connection of the zero clients is exactly the same as PCs)

More about the Yulong RDS Solution

To properly license Yulong zero clients in a Windows multi-user system, certain CALs are needed for each Yulong seat, along with certain OSs running on the host computer. Both Windows client operating systems and server operating systems will work with the Yulong Shared Computing solution but at this time, the Windows client operating system does not permit licensing a multiuser solution under Microsoft compliance, only the Windows Server operating systems provide a multiuser solution using Remote Desktop Services (RDS) and/or other technologies. In order for the Yulong workstations to be fully licensed, they will each need a Remote Desktop Services Client Access License (RDS CAL) along with a Windows Server Client Access License (WS CAL). The total cost of these CALs combined will range anywhere from $10-$120 per seat depending on the type of organization deploying the workstations, and your licensing agreement with Microsoft. But these CALs are perpetual licenses – not annual subscriptions.

Windows Server Client Access Licenses (WS CALs)
A Windows Server CAL is a license that allows customers to access Windows Server. CALs are used in conjunction with Microsoft Windows Server OS licenses to allow Users and/or Devices to access and utilize the services of that server OS.

Remote Desktop Service Client Access Licenses (RDS CALs)

RDS CALS are required for users or devices that want to utilize Remote Desktop Service functionality on Windows Server.

About the version of CALs

Windows Server CALs must be the same version as—or higher than—the server software they are accessing. In other words, users or devices accessing a server running Windows Server 2016 must have Windows Server 2016 CALs. Additionally, Windows Server 2016 CALs may be used to access Windows Server 2012 (but Windows Server 2012 CALs cannot be used to access Windows Server 2016).

The result of the licensing model differences by using shared computing, traditional desktop PCs, and VDI over three years can be seen in the following example:

Sharing: One server OS license per target server ($883) + For each client device: ( 1 Server device CAL ($30) and 1 RDS device CAL ($102)) x 30 = $132 x 30 = $4,843

Desktop PCs: 30 target desktop OS licenses ($187 each) x 30 = $5,610

VDI: 30 target desktop OS licenses ($187 each) x 30 + For each client device: VDA rights subscription ($100 / device / year) x 30 devices x 3 years = $14,610

* Cost based on 30 zero clients (not eligible for SA) over 3 years, Windows Server 2012 R2 standard, Windows 8.1 Pro, US VOL pricing, corporate customers.

Things to consider:
  • If you are replacing PCs, you may already have the WS CAL for each seat.
  • If you are replacing thin clients, you may already have both the RDS and WS CALs.

While deploying zero clients from Yulong, the required licenses mentioned above must be purchased from Microsoft Windows. It is significant to note that Microsoft’s license policy varies between countries and Yulong users are requested to refer to their local Microsoft’s partners before purchase.

The languages that the CloudS Server Manager software and the zero client support include Simplified Chinese, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Russian, Polish, Slovak, Korean and Persian. More languages will be added with future updates. The default language for the CloudS Server Manager is the system language. The default language for the zero client is English. Customers may change the language at the display menu of the login interface.
1, Most popular Windows software can be run with Yulong zero clients such as Office Applications, Skype, Outlook, Chrome, Firefox, IE, Edge, Teamviewer, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator,  Adobe After Effects, Adobe Indesign, AutoDesk CAD, and Camtasia, etc. Generally, software from well-known software companies is compatible with multi-user shared environments. A few software such as VPN software cannot work in the multi-user environment. To know if your desired software can be run in the multi-user environment without zero clients, you can try running the software in remote desktop sessions with PCs (run “mstsc”). 3D games are not well supported as desktop refreshment is just at 30 FPS. Graphic card sharing requires the host running a Windows 10 or Server 2016 system. Professional designers who require heavy rendering on an independent graphic card are not suggested to use this solution. If you need to use specified industry software, please consult us before purchasing it.

2, Yulong zero clients support conventional USB devices such as printers, scanners, storage devices, etc. If you need to use a typical USB device on the zero client, please consult us before purchase.

3, The Yulong solution requires reliable and low latency local networks. Wireless LAN or WAN connection is recommended for individual and occasional use only. A poor network connection will cause unexpected disconnection and compromised experience.

4,  Centralized computing may cause a single point of failure issue. If your use case is sensitive about immediate access. make sure you have a fail-over solution to recover immediately in the event of a host failure, for example, installing multiple OS, using redundant or standby hosts, taking scheduled backups, etc.
